Eileen Nisbet - Introduction. Eileen Nisbet occupied a unique space in 20th Century ceramics. At a time when functional pottery dominated, her work was entirely different to that of her contemporaries. In the last fifteen years of her life, she developed a remarkable way of working with porcelain and could be said to be one of the most innovative ceramicists working at the time. She exhibited widely both in the UK and internationally, and was also an inspirational teacher and a driving force behind the Ceramics course at what is now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. An artist of total commitment; her output was prolific from the time she left art school until her death. However, promotion of ceramics in the ’70s and ’80s was considerably less widespread than now, and of course her work predated the culture of publicity via the Internet. This site is therefore intended to act as an educational and practical resource for students and researchers and to be an opportunity to resurrect and promote the work of a unique and significant artist. . |
